All information can be easily viewed or adjusted on the large, easy-to-see 7.5-in. display. This same function is available as the main source of information when audio navigation is operating.
Toyota says the car is "driven in levels" of autonomous mode that can be set based on the area where the car is being driven. The ESSENSE has four autonomous driving modes. The first is called "Follow Me" which uses sensors to identify and track objects, people, and other vehicles; the second is called "Automated Highway" which is used to travel in specific lanes in a carpool lane and uses cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors; the third is called "Preferred" which uses radar, ultrasonic sensors and cameras to identify and track vehicles and pedestrians; and the fourth is called "Autonomous Cruise" which is similar to "Preferred" but allows the driver to change lanes.
Toyota is one of a growing number of auto makers exploring new digital technologies that may eventually replace a traditional steering wheel, such as the ability to use some of the same technology already found on smartphones. Toyota and Panasonic together are developing a digital porthole to replace the dashboard porthole, for instance, where drivers are now able to use their smartphones to access the Internet.
